The North American Coach Development Summit brings together professionals from across the United States, North America, and around the world who educate, develop, train, and supervise sport coaches along with coaches, athletic directors, managers, sport scientists and sport science researchers interested in coach education and coach development.

The Summit program features practical application of best practice models and research-based information that demonstrate the integration of sport science, learning systems, and professional leadership in sport coach education and development across all levels of sport from participation through peak performance. 

The goal of the North American Coach Development Summit is to highlight PRACTICAL information that coach educators, developers, and others can hear and use in practice immediately in designing systems and working with coaches in the field.

What to Expect at the Summit

Attendees at the North American Coach Development Summit can expect:

  • A dynamic program focused on interactions, discussions and networking. Come prepared to ask questions, explore solutions and share ideas with industry peers who are focused on enriching sport across the spectrum of participation through high performance.

The North American Coach Development Summit is open to anyone passionate about quality coaching education, coach development, and long term athletic development.

Attendees and presenters include a wide range of coaches, directors of coaching, coach educators, sport science researchers, and sports pedagogy specialists interested in professional coach development. They represent a wide range of national governing sport organizations, non-profit and for profit programs and academics from across North America and around the world.

Types of Programs at the Summit

Lectures

Lectures are 15 minute presentations designed to share ideas, challenges, and solution strategies for educating coaches, providing coaching education, and enhancing coach development. Program submissions in this category are designed to share current models of practice for coach education/development OR to explore original applied research from the educational and program perspective.

Panel

Panels are a group of 3-4 experts or practitioners in the coaching, coach education, or coach development field, who share facts, offer insights, and respond to audience questions either through questions curated by a moderator or taken from the audience directly. The panel session typically lasts for 60 minutes.

Workshop

A ‘workshop’ presents an in-depth 60 minute exploration of a theme and should provide opportunities to share professional practice strategies through demonstrations and hands-on experiences for participants. Workshop abstracts must include: a statement of the specific learning objectives, teaching methods, specific techniques, and a description of materials that will be shared with workshop participants. Programs can be research and/or application based.

Master Class

A ‘master class’ is a 90 -120 minute program that is an in depth exploration of an applied or research based topic in coaching, coach education and/or coach development.  Master classes should have a clear target audience (e.g. academic coach educators, non-profit sport organization leaders) and 2-3 specific objectives (e.g., developing coaching minor coursework, retention of volunteer female coaches).  Master classes are not lecture based and should be designed to stimulate discussion among a group of peers to explore shared challenges, develop research needs, discuss new concepts, etc.  Master class participation will be by pre-registration only and class sizes will be capped at a maximum of 20 participants to allow for quality interaction.  Priority will be given to master class submissions that can demonstrate clear outcome goals.

Posters

‘Interactive posters’ present research findings, applied materials, techniques and/or proposed conceptual frameworks in the areas of coaching education and coach development.  Accepted posters will be on display during a dedicated time during the Summit program and the interactive time is designed to spark discussion and support networking.  Poster authors will prepare hanging posters and will be expected to present their work during the dedicated poster session interactive time during the Summit. Students are encouraged to submit projects, theses, or dissertations that are in the conceptual phase, in progress, or that have been completed. Student work submissions must include the collaborating academic advisor(s). The poster format should be A0 (1189mm x 841mm / 33.1 x 46.8 inches) and will hang horizontal.

5 in 5 Presentations

Each presenter will have 5 slides and 5 minutes to present their subject. Time limits will be enforced and presentations will cease when the 5 minute timer goes off. After the first three presenters, there will be a 10 minute discussion period followed by the next three presenters and 10 more minutes of discussion. At the end of all presentations, there will be an open discussion of the topic(s) as a whole. Join for fast-paced presentations and exciting discussion!
